Improving English Oral Communication Skills Through a Leveling
Program based on Gamification and a technological approach.
The current study addresses the gap between the communicative goals of the Costa Rican Ministry of Public Education and students’ actual oral performance in rural contexts. The project designed and implemented a leveling program based on gamification and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to create a motivating and inclusive environment that strengthens confidence, participation, and fluency.

The theoretical foundation covers oral communication, diagnostic evaluation, leveling programs, gamification, and ICT as complementary tools to foster meaningful learning within the CEFR A2 level required by the national curriculum. Using a quantitative and explanatory approach, the research applied pre- and post-tests, interviews, observations, and surveys with the 5B group. Results showed that students initially lacked confidence and fluency, but after applying the gamified program, through tools such as Kahoot, Quizizz, and Duolingo Classroom, they improved pronunciation, vocabulary, and motivation.
Findings confirm that combining gamification and ICT enhances oral proficiency and engagement while reducing speaking anxiety. The proposal also provided teachers with a practical, replicable model for integrating technological and motivational strategies. Conclusions highlight the value of innovative methodologies aligned with curriculum goals and recommend ongoing teacher training, equal technological access, and formative assessment. Overall, the project offers a sustainable model that bridges educational gaps and promotes enjoyable, meaningful English learning in Costa Rican primary schools.
